Manufacturing your future

Most people work with two feet firmly planted on the ground. That’s not been the experience for Boeing intern Emily Blundred. 

“I don’t know where else I would ever get the opportunity to go 70 feet up in the air and operate a lift,” said Blundred, talking about the favorite part of her Boeing internship. As part of her summer experience, Blundred has learned how to operate a boom lift, a piece of machinery which is supported by a hydraulic arm that’s capable of maneuvering around obstacles and extending to high elevations.

From the factory in Everett to the Fabrication facility in Frederickson, this summer five Core Plus Aerospace graduates are experiencing internships at sites around Puget Sound designed to help them build upon, and enhance, their talent and potential.

An internship at Boeing means rewarding experiences on a team that’s building the future of aerospace.

“I was a Core Plus intern in 2019 at the Renton site. That led me to going to a competition called Skills USA where I met different managers that worked with mechatronics and so I applied to the internship after,” said intern Jeric Liam. 

What does a day look like for these interns given the changed environment? First and foremost all employees must wear a face mask while on Boeing property.

“I really like being able to work in different fields. While I am an electronics technician I am able to work on the water jet and learn about autoclaves and do repairs on different machines,” said intern Myah Wilson. “It’s so cool and I’m not just stuck in one box. I can sample different fields that I am interested in.”

These interns are building upon the education they developed in Core Plus Aerospace to take them to the next level.

“I definitely recommend applying to Core Plus, even if you’re not sure, and taking different shop-related classes in high school,” said Blundred. “It led me to where I am today, and I wouldn’t change a single thing.”

Core Plus Aerospace is a two-year high school manufacturing curriculum, developed by Boeing and provided to the state in 2015, that prepares students for high-demand jobs through hands-on learning. Students learn real-world skills that open doors to manufacturing jobs, community and technical college programs, apprenticeships and the military. Learn about it at coreplusaerospace.org.
